Houston’s vibrant art scene was on full display during the 38th Annual Art Car Parade, held from April 10–13, 2025.  This event, organized by The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, featured over 250 uniquely decorated vehicles, transforming Allen Parkway and downtown Houston into a moving gallery of creativity.

Parade Highlights

The parade showcased a diverse array of mobile artworks, including a 12-foot skeleton atop a red-and-black sedan, a larger-than-life banana car, and a 1972 Cadillac El Dorado adorned with hundreds of seashells, buttons, and horse figurines.   Animal-themed vehicles were also prominent, featuring designs like a giant chicken, a monstrous puffer fish, and an anatomically-correct cockroach.

Community Involvement

The event emphasized community engagement, with more than 25 Houston ISD schools participating.  Students collaborated on projects such as Red Elementary’s “Reading Rainbow Dragon,” constructed with recycled CDs and student-built motors, and Bellaire High School’s “Houston Strong,” a tribute to natural disasters.  These projects fostered creativity, collaboration, and confidence among students.

Art Car Museum Closure

In a significant development, Houston’s iconic Art Car Museum closed its doors on April 28, 2024, after more than 25 years of showcasing local and international art car creations.  Founded by Ann Harithas in 1998, the museum was a staple of Houston’s art community.  Discussions are ongoing to continue and evolve the museum’s presence and mission in the future.

Despite the museum’s closure, the Art Car Parade continues to thrive, celebrating Houston’s unique blend of creativity and community spirit.
